The Kodawari Way: Building Community One Connection at a Time

At Kodawari Collective, we often speak about ideas like Kodawari, care and excellence in every detail, and Omotenashi, wholehearted hospitality. These words guide how we work, how we welcome people, and how we try to show up every day. But at the end of the day, they are still just ideas.

What really matters is what happens when those ideas are lived in a quiet and consistent way, day in and day out.

Every single day, we’re given an opportunity to leave an impact on someone who walks through our doors. Sometimes that impact is small and fleeting. Other times, it stays with people and grows alongside them. This is one of those stories.

What follows is a reflection from a client who, over the course of nearly four months, became a dear friend. During that time, he didn’t just see the work we do on cars. He experienced what life looks like inside this space: the conversations, the community, the pace, the care.

At one point, he asked me, “How can I help?” And I realized we had an opportunity. We’ve always wanted to share our thoughts on life, cars, and community in a more thoughtful way. So I asked him a simple question: would you be willing to help us write our very first blog post by sharing your experience through your own lens?

These words are his. This perspective is his. And this story reflects what can happen when you choose to live with care, presence, and openness, not just in business, but in life.

Rediscovering Passion Through Connection

I still remember the day I walked into Kodawari Collective, a place that would change my life in ways I never thought possible. That's when I met Nau Ho, the founder, and our conversation sparked something deep within me. As we talked, Nau invited me back into a world that I had cut off for decades. He shared with me his passion for building community and creating a space where people can come together around their shared love for cars. I was drawn to his story and dedication, and I felt a spark of excitement that I hadn't felt in a long time.  Nau's passion for building community is inspirational, and his invitation to join the Kodawari Collective family has opened doors to new experiences, connections, and opportunities that I never thought possible. As I've gotten to know Nau and the Kodawari Crew, I've been struck by their dedication to excellence and their genuine love for cars. The concept of “Kodawari” – pursuit of perfection – is woven into every aspect of the shop, from the meticulous attention to detail in their work to the warmth and hospitality they extend to every guest.

Omotenashi: Hospitality Without Expectation

One of the things that truly sets Kodawari Collective apart is the spirit of “Omotenashi” – a Japanese concept that embodies the art of wholehearted hospitality. Nau and his team go above and beyond to make every guest feel welcome, valued, and appreciated. It's a truly special experience that has left a lasting impression on me. What I love most about Kodawari Collective is the sense of community that permeates every aspect of the shop. It's not just a place where people come to get their cars detailed; it's a gathering spot for like-minded individuals who share a sense of passion for cars and a desire to connect with others.

Community Beyond Cars

I've formed meaningful connections with people who understand my love for cars, and I've learned so much from them. We've shared stories, exchanged tips, and supported each other in ways that go beyond just cars. The community is further strengthened by the many meetups and workshops that Nau and his team organize. These events provide a platform for people to come together, share their knowledge and experiences, and learn from each other. They're a testament to Nau's commitment to education and community-building, and they've played a significant role in deepening my understanding of cars and the Kodawari Way. But what I appreciate the most about Kodawari Collective is the way Nau has re-sparked my passion for cars and driving. I had kind of closed the door on that part of my life, but Nau's kind invitation, enthusiasm and expertise have reignited a fire that I thought had gone out. And it's not just about the passion for cars – it's about the experiences he's created for his community and shared with me. From giving rides to hundreds of people in his NSX on the Kodawari Circuit, to creating a space where people can come together and share their love for cars, Nau's dedication to his craft is truly inspiring.

Family, Team, and Balance

One of the things that's also truly special about Kodawari Collective is the way Nau's family is involved in the business. Sherry plays an integral part in the business, and her care and dedication to the team and the community are truly inspiring. It's great to see their children being part of their Kodawari dream. They're growing up surrounded by the passion and dedication that defines Kodawari Collective, and it's wonderful to see them learning and thriving in this environment. The way Nau and Sherry are committed to balance family life with their "business" is a testament to their character and priorities. Nau's dedication to his employees is also worth mentioning. He's built a business that not only supports his community but also provides a nurturing environment for his team. It's clear that he emphasizes their well-being and growth, and that's something to be admired. The Kodawari way extends beyond the shop, too. Nau has collaborated with other businesses that share his values and commitment to Omotenashi. These partnerships have created a network of like-minded individuals and businesses that support and uplift each other. It's a powerful example of how businesses can come together to create something greater than the sum of its parts. As I've become a regular at Kodawari Collective, I've come to realize that it's not just about the cars; it's about the people, the connections, and the experiences we share. Nau's approach to community-building is rooted in his desire to create meaningful connections and share life experiences. As Nau puts it, "Share your own version of Kodawari" building communities that inspire, uplift, and support each other – communities that make a difference in our lives and in the lives of those around us, where care and passion come together in meaningful ways. As I reflect on my experience with Kodawari Collective, I'm reminded of the power of community and connection. In a world that increasingly feels isolated and disconnected, it's uplifting to find a place where people come together around a shared passion. Whether you're a car enthusiast or just looking for a community to connect with, I encourage you to reach out and extend an invitation to someone who might appreciate it – you never know the impact it might have on their life...just like it did for mine :)

Where Care Comes Full Circle

This story is a reminder of a lesson I keep discovering again and again in my own life.

When you choose to live in a way that prioritizes service, truly helping others without expecting anything in return, something begins to shift. For me, it helped uncover a sense of balance I had been searching for for most of my life. And when I say balance, I don’t mean doing less or wanting less. I mean spending less time trapped in ego, comparison, and the constant pressure of personal ambition that often creates quiet, internal suffering.

Every time I return my focus to serving others, by simply being present, listening, and caring for the sake of caring, life has a way of responding in the most unexpected and beautiful ways. Through friendships. Through growth. Through moments that feel deeply human.

True service is not easy. It asks you to set your to-do list aside and to be fully present. And more often than not, there is no immediate return on investment. In a world that constantly nudges us toward “me, me, me,” choosing to live this way helps restore a sense of balance, both internally and collectively.

Kodawari Collective exists because of the people who pass through it. Some briefly. Some for a season. And some stay longer than they ever expected. We’re grateful for every conversation, every shared experience, and every person who has helped shape this space simply by being part of it.

The Kodawari Way isn’t something we ask people to adopt. It’s something we hope to live openly enough that it inspires others to interpret it in their own way — and to carry it into the places that help them find their own sense of balance.

And finally, thank you, Steve.

Thank you for trusting us with your story. Thank you for your mentorship, your friendship, and your generosity. We wish nothing but the very best for you and your family.
